Dr Rita Melia’s keynote address will showcase the Arts in Early Childhood Pilot in 2023. In supporting, promoting and enhancing The Hundred Languages of Children and their multiple intelligences, Rita will highlight examples of the work undertaken with artists and early years educators in early learning and care and school age childcare settings.

 

Keynote Address by: Dr Rita Melia, Museum of Childhood Ireland

Bio: Dr Rita Melia is a lecturer in early childhood education and care at Atlantic Technological University Galway and Mayo. Rita has worked in the early childhood education and care sector for over 30 years in practice, research and policy. As an advocate for every child having access too, and actively participating in, quality early years provision, Rita’s work is grounded in an image of the child as capable and competent, with 100 languages and multiple intelligences.  Rita is passionate about creativity and the arts in early years. As the coordinator of The Artist in Residence programme at ATU Galway and Mayo, the project SCEALTA ( Stories, Curiosity, Engagement, Active Learning, Theatre , Aistear) was awarded the Arts in Education Documentation Portal Award 2023 Our videos | Arts in Education  SCEALTA : Our Bus Our Journey. SCEALTA has also been short listed for an Irish Times Education Award and was featured in Education Matters Yearbook Early Childhood – Ireland’s Education Yearbook (irelandseducationyearbook.ie). Rita was the coordinator of the Arts in Early Learning and Care and School Age Childcare pilot in 2023, where she coordinated the work with artists and early years educators in early learning and care and school age childcare settings. Loris Malaguzzi`s saying “Nothing without joy” resonates with Rita, the joy that children and educators experiences when they engage with the arts through the many different forms will be presented to inspire and support participants, curiosity, creativity and joy!
