As the weather becomes warmer, it is essential for childcare providers to remain vigilant about safe sleep practices and the risks associated with overheating during sleep.
Guidance for Policy on Safe Sleep in Pre-school Services (December 2025)
Current guidance recommends maintaining sleep room temperatures between 16°C and 20°C for babies under 12 months of age. Sleep areas should also be monitored regularly to ensure children remain safe, comfortable, and protected from overheating.
Keeping up to date with safe sleep guidance helps to:
- Protect children’s health and wellbeing
- Promote consistent, evidence-based practice
- Support compliance with regulatory requirements
- Build confidence and reassurance with families
Safe sleep is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage all early learning and childcare providers to review the latest guidance with their teams and ensure safe sleep practices remain a priority throughout the summer months.
